How Important It Is To Use Flame Retardant Paint

  • Enhance the safety of your property with flame-retardant paints that are expertly designed for walls, ceilings, and structural elements. These coatings not only improve fire resistance but also effectively prevent the spread of flames, providing you with peace of mind and protection when it matters most.

  • Fire retardant paint creates a protective barrier preventing oxygen from fuelling a fire on the protected assets.
  •  Increased peace of mind knowing you’re better protected from potential disasters. · Reduced insurance costs
  • Fire-retardant paint is tested against British safety standards BS 476, Part 7, which separates paints into different classes based on their performance. Class 1 is the best result and indicates that the paint coating prevents the spread of fire. Class 0 paint is applied to high-risk areas where surfaces are less likely to catch fire.
  • between 30 and 120 minutes
How long does fire-resistant paint last?
Flame Retardant Paint needs to be maintained and recoated per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Most flame retardant paints can last between 30 and 120 minutes, according to their ATSM fire rating, giving time for the fire services to act before it’s too late.
  • Intumescent paint
Modern flame retardant paint can last 5–25 years, but it should be reapplied every 5 years to be sure you are protected. Intumescent paint can deteriorate over time, so it’s important to reapply it.

Even doing your hall and staircase with flame-retardant paint will cost you double in materials but no more on labour, so the cost of a good paint per 5 ltr is around £65; the cost of 5 ltr of fire-retardant paint is around £130 to £240 depending on what products you want to use.

What is the difference between fire retardant paint and intumescent paint?
Fire retardant paint will slow flames from spreading and is meant for fires to self-extinguish. In contrast, intumescent paint reacts to high temperatures by swelling and creating thick char barrier layers of foam to insulate the structure behind the paint from fire and smoke.
Fire retardant paint can protect against fire for 30–120 minutes, depending on the paint and the number of coats applied. The paint’s fire-resistant capabilities are rated according to the ATSM fire rating system.
Reacting to heat
Fire retardant paint reacts to intense heat by releasing a flame-moistening gas and swells up to 50 times its thickness to form a carbon layer. This carbon layer insulates the material from heat giving time for escape.
